Matt India Medical Center

Coming to Matt India means entering into a traditional ayurvedic Indian hospital with the entirety of ayurvedic healing unfolding to the patient in an unpretentious way. The warmth of the ever attentive therapists and doctors on site allow for any awkwardness that Westerners may feel when encountering ayurvedic treatments for the first time, to melt away and concentrate solely on what the patient is here for: giving space and time to the body to absorb the treatments and facilitate its healing.

Most acclaimed are the obligatory panchakarma treatments here (1 week – 12 weeks), bone structure realignment and cure for movement restriction, deep tissue work/massages, treatments for many forms of arthritis, pain, burnout syndrome and stress relief, remedy for depression and treatments for cancer patients.

This establishment was originally created and ran for five years as an education program for the villagers, especially women, to have access to the study of ayurveda. The hospital function derived from here in 1990 and has since been managed by Joy Thattumkal as a charitable trust that provides healthcare for visitors from around the world to heal diseases where traditional treatments have failed, and also serves as a walk-in hospital for local villagers at certain times a week. There are two certified ayurvedic doctors on site, six female and four male therapists, all trained in-house and certified by the Health Department of Kerala.

Joy really owns his name. He acts as the main contact person to all the patients and never fails to lose his cheerfulness. Good-natured, he shares his stories about his studies abroad in English or German language. He supervises the treatments here, always prepared to answer any questions.

On request, he also teaches a few traditional Hatha Yoga exercises in the early morning on the rooftop, including pranayama and a few minutes of meditation.

Following his lead, the entire team at Matt India is dedicated to make the patients’ lives better, fuller and longer. The physicians and staff members understand their responsibility and are dedicated in providing compassionate care thus creating a warm family atmosphere for best rejuvenation.

The modest facility is clean with all essentials, but no extra luxury. At the first encounter, visitors with higher expectations have found the treatment rooms with simple massage mats too modest, but this is what this place is about: a true Indian ayurvedic experience with no distractions.

Prices for treatments and accommodation are very low, in an attempt not to exclude anyone from Ayurvedic remedy for lack of funds. Costs for a two-week panchakarma treatment can be as low as 500 EUR if no special ayurvedic medicines are required.

The meals give a delightful taste of typical Kerala cuisine without the spiciness to accommodate a sattvic diet. Meals are adjusted and prepared individually where course of prescribed treatment requires so. However, Indian food is more typical here than dishes according to western ayurvedic cooking books. Meals are always made from local vegetables and with patience, knowledge and love from the kitchen staff.

WLAN is available on most areas of the property but not in every room, in addition to one computer with internet access next to the entrance hall.

About The Area: Fort Kochin

Set about 45km south of Fort Kochin, Matt India is located in a peaceful fishing village, away from tourism destinations, amidst the beautiful Kerala backwaters. Beaches are within easy reach by bicycle or rickshaw taxi.

Closest airport is Cochin International Airport and Matt India provides airport transfer to and from clinic.

Matt India is operating all year. The most popular time to visit Kerala is December to March, while June and July, as well as October and November are considered the monsoon months, which can actually be a good time to book an ayurvedic treatment, as the more humid climate helps the body to naturally cleanse.
