The Tapovan Center in Normandy is a place to meet like-minded people in the aspiration of diving deeper into the knowledge of Ayurveda. Besides its Ayurvedic retreat offers, it’s one of the major centers in Europe to learn techniques such as Hatha & Nada yoga, Reiki, Ayurvedic massage, Shirodhara (oil treatments), vegetarian cooking, pre/post-natal massage, reflexotherapy and many more. Tapovan welcomes its students and patients with an open and vibrant atmosphere expressed by a passionate team committed to continuously building the bridge between eastern and western traditions.
Founded by by Kiran Vyas, Tapovan has been operating for over 30 years and is recognized as the one of the most authentic centers in Europe for the training of Ayurveda and yoga. The sanskrit word Tapovan translates as ‘forest of spiritual practice’, and in fact, the founders describe their mission as creating a peaceful place in the heart of nature, full of joy, of light and spirituality. Tapovan desires to help people progress towards a greater well-being physically, mentally and spiritually and move towards an inner balance, thus finding a greater understanding of themselves.
Kiran Vyas, who is inspired by the philosophy of Gandhi, Tagore and Sri Aurobindo, has cardinally contributed to the evolution of Ayurveda throughout Europe. He is a brilliant teacher, and with previous experience of founding and managing three schools in India, he delivers lectures and has written various reference books on Ayurveda and Yoga.
The offering of seminars and residential study programs at Tapovan is outstanding. Positioning itself as an open university, it even organizes international symposiums on Ayurveda, sustainable development, arts and literature. On these occasions, many physicians and experts from all over the world are invited. Its courses are accepted by the Government of France and diplomas and certificates in the respective fields can be obtained.
However, Tapovan also offers Ayurvedic treatments in form of week-long retreats or individual treatments for short term visitors. The day-long Ayurvedic mini retreats and a la carte treatments include options such as the rejuvenating full body abhyanga massages, the chakra balancing Marma Tchikitsa Technique, traditional Shirodhara, Kansu foot massages, facial treatments, or private yoga classes.
The week-long retreats take place on certain dates that are listed on their website, giving choices between programs for well-being, slimming, rejuvenating, pre- and postnatal, and detox. The Yoga and Hike Retreat has lately been getting raving reviews offering guests a week dedicated to fitness through walking in the open air, breathing techniques, meditation, singing mantras, and vegetarian food. Personalised Ayurveda counseling is included in the price of the retreats.
Vyas’ wife, an orthodox medical practitioner and homeopath, his brother, and his daughter-in-law, also an Ayurvedic doctor, support Kiran Vyas in running the center. Based on time of the year, there are additional doctors on site serving in different areas such as personal consultations, supervision of treatments and giving lectures. The therapy rooms are small and simple, very down-to-earth.
Depending on the seminars and number of students that are here at a given time, it can get lively here with fun evenings of sharing arts, performances, concerts and mantra singing and Tapovan fills with laughter and joy.
The yoga classes available at Tapovan are varied and unique. Visitors are invited to try styles such as Hatha Yoga, Nada Yoga (using vibrations and sound), Yoga of Breath, and Yoga for the Eyes.
Tapovan offers only Ayurvedic and organic cuisine freshly made from local products and vegetable from their own garden. Meals are prepared by a savvy Indian chef.
Retreat guests stay in basic and cozy rooms situated beautifully within the 25 acres campus or can chose to stay in other hotels close by.
The center mainly uses alternative energies such as solar panels.
