Ayurveda is very popular in Sri Lanka and many herbs and plants used in ayurveda are also indigenous to this tropical country. With a growth in wellness tourism, Sri Lanka is becoming a real competitor with India when it comes to ayurvedic treatment centres and resorts. Most ayurveda centres and resorts in Sri Lanka are located in scenic settings by beachside locations or snuggled in the mountains of the hill country.

Panchakarma is especially popular with foreigners who come here to benefit from this treatment which requires a stay of at least two weeks. Some centres require a minimum stay to ensure effective treatment. After consultation with a qualified ayurveda physician, an individualised treatment programme and detailed schedule is put together for each guest. Some centres specialise in treating specific diseases and ailments.

Many ayurveda centres offer special packages which include consultations, medicines, treatments and meals prepared according to ayurvedic principles. Some offer complementary activities like yoga, tai chi, music therapy, meditation or relaxation. Centres may limit the number of guests to keep treatment personalised.

The best time to visit Sri Lanka is during the dry season which runs from December to March. There are two monsoon seasons here: from May to August, and from October to November. The south-western part of the island receives the highest rainfall. Though travel during the rainy season can be inconvenient, the most popular centres are more likely to have availability and rates come down significantly.
